Health Risks of GM Crops

Below is a basic list from raw-wisdom.com of some potential health risks:

  1. GMs can cause direct cancer and degenerative diseases.
  2. It can cause indirect and non-traceable effects on cancer rates.
  3. GMs can cause superviruses through the Vector Method of genetically modifying.
  4. Plant antibiotic genes can be spread to human cells from the GM plants cells.
  5. GMs can increase food allergies.
  6. GMs can also cause birth defects and shorter life spans.
  7. Crops contain interior toxins.
  8. The plants also have a lowered nutrition.
  9. The foods are unnatural.
  10. No regulated health testing.
  11. Can cause a radical change in diet.

Environmental Risks of GM Crops

Below is a modified list from The Union of Concerned Scientists and based on their 1996 report, The Ecological Risks of Engineered Crops, of six potential environmental risks.

1. Modified crops could become weeds themselves.

2. Crops could serve as conduits which modified genes could move to new wild plants, making them weeds.

3. Crops engineered to produce viruses could create new and more virulent/ widely spread viruses.

4. Plants engineered to express potentially toxic substances could harmfully affect surrounding organisms.

5. Crops may initiate a disturbance that can affect entire ecosystems in unpredictable ways.

6. Crops may threaten genetic diversity.
