Below is a list of major innovators for GM crops. While these innovations are taking place, there are opponents to them working to stop its development.

Monsanto strives to "apply innovation and technology to help farmers around the world produce more while conserving more. We help farmers grow yield sustainably so they can be successful, produce healthier foods, better animal feeds and more fiber, while also reducing agriculture's impact on our environment." 5

90% of all the genetically engineered crops belong to Monsanto. They produce large acre crops such as corn, cotton, and oilseeds as well as smaller ones vegetables. The workers at Monsanto genetically engineer the seeds of the crops and make it so that the resulting plants are more cost-effective and efficient for farmers. Monsanto leases out their patents to farmers and other companies around the world. Not only do they sell modified seeds but also herbicides such as the Roundup®.5

Syngenta, DuPont, Bayer, and other companies own the other 10% of the Genetically Engineered Crops.

"Syngenta is one of the world's leading companies with more than 24,000 employees in over 90 countries dedicated to our purpose: Bringing plant potential to life. Through world-class science, global reach and commitment to our customers we help to increase crop productivity, protect the environment and improve health and quality of life." 7

Syngenta produces crops that are modified to different geographic locations. The crops have high yields and are very reliable. It produces corn (maize), soybean, sugar beet, sunflower and winter oilseed rape. The crops include genetically engineered varieties such as Bt and HT corn. 7

DuPont's mission is to "deliver global nutrition through higher crop yields and healthier foods while developing solutions to help meet the world's energy needs." 6

DuPont produces pesticides, herbicides, turf, and land management products. They produce bioengineered seeds through another company called Pioneer.

Bayer's mission statement includes "the slogan “Bayer: Science For A Better Life” summarizes the Group’s goals, strategies and values. In the future, Bayer will focus on innovation and growth in the areas of health care, nutrition and high-tech materials." 8

Bayer genetically engineers plants as well as creates fungicides, herbicides, and insecticides. Not only does the company research on crop sciences, but also health care and material sciences (which include developing plastics and polycarbonate film.)
