Mary, Mary, quite contrary,

How does your garden grow?

With Silver Bells, and Cockle Shells,

All... Genetically Modified?

Mary's garden is full of GM crops full of seedless watermelons and plump tomatoes just like every garden around town and Old Mac Donald feeds all his farm animals GM soybean feed just like most other farmers. What's new? GM crops are everywhere now a days yet most people are not aware of it. In 2003, only 34% of people taking the PEW Initiative on Food and Biotechnology had heard about GM foods and jusdt 24% of the people beleived they've actually eaten GM foods ("American's Knowlege"). If you don't believe these percentages, look at the ones from the polls on the home page of this website. Again, many don't know much about GMs. But, if you think you've never eaten GM foods before, think again because 70-75% of all processed foods in the grocery store contain GMOs.

GM Crops are in most of the countries, but most of the production occurs in the US. GM Crops include Herbicide-Tolerant corn, Bacillus thuringiensis corn, delayed-ripening tomatoes, and miniature watermelons. What these crops have in common is that they are all genetically engineered through processes which modify them to obtain desired traits such as resistance to pests and herbicides.

Surrounding GM Crops are both benefits and controversies in the categories of health and environmental issues as well as ethical, political, social, economic, and legal issues.

All over the world there is food shortages in supplying the worlds 6 billion and growing population, but should GM Crops be the solution?
